We’ve all heard the phrase “mindset is key”. Well, I would like to rephrase that because I believe that your mindset determines your success. The way you think shapes how you understand and engage with the world around you. Knowledge is power because you cannot change or achieve something if you do not know it. This is why reading is so important. It opens up your mind to new ideas and ways of doing things. But it’s not just about reading, having access to books that will grow your mind is crucial to getting ahead in your career.
Honestly, if I had known about these five books early in my career, I believe I would have reached key career milestones a lot sooner. I would have avoided some silly mistakes such as undercharging for my services. If you don’t know what I am talking about, check out this blog post here. Each of these books has played a big role in developing and growing my mindset. These books have helped me to become a better worker and I am sure you will get a lot from them too.
Let’s not waste any more time. Here are the five supreme books that will save your career in 2022.

How this book will help you:
This book is a must-read if you have ever struggled with negotiating your salary, asking for a raise or raising your prices at work. For any person who wants to grow their earning potential regardless of the industry you work in, you must read this book.
After I read this book, I realized that I had been a serial underearner and needed to change this. In fact, it was this book that inspired my blog post about being a serial underearner, read it here. What amazed me most about this book was the number of women making over 6 figures from all different walks of life. I mean women from all different backgrounds and different professions, women with and without university degrees. With some women even making 6 figures while working part-time, yep that’s right I said part-time.
As well as hearing inspiring stories about what other women are doing and have done to maximise their salaries. You will learn a ton of helpful tips about how to grow your earnings and keep your earnings growing.
This is the book I give all my female friends!
Outliers
By Malcolm Gladwell
How this book will help you:
If you are someone who dreams of success but never quite understands how to achieve success. Or maybe you are someone who is inspired by other people’s story of success but feel overwhelmed about what it takes to achieve success for yourself. If this is you, you will find the ideas in this book very helpful.
Who doesn’t love Malcolm Gladwell and if you haven’t heard of him, where have you been? Malcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, public speaker and author of five New York Times bestselling books. I first heard Malcolm speak on Youtube and was blown away by how he presents information and just makes you think about the world differently. I read Outliers towards the end of 2020 and was again blown away. This book challenges the idea of what it means to be successful. This book left me feeling more motivated and believing that I could do whatever I put my mind to. With this book, you learn that success is not about luck, but about intentionally using what is around you to craft together a winning recipe. Sounds intriguing? I highly recommend this book.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

This is an oldie but a goodie, it’s a staple on our bookshelf and one that my family constantly returns to. It’s no wonder this book has been dubbed “the #1 best seller in personal success and leadership. If you want to learn more about how to be a leader in your field then read this book. If you want to learn about how to be more productive, then read this book. And if you want to learn about how to achieve more with the time you have, (you know what’s coming…) Read this book.
Basically what I am saying is, you need to read this book. This was one of the first books I read and I literally bookmarked every page. It has been a game-changer for me. The lessons in this book have stood the test of time and continue to be of value in nearly everything I do. I credit this book for helping me to think differently about my approach to work and what success would look like for me. But also learning how to manage those tricky workplace conversations. There is an excellent chapter on thinking win-win. That blew my mind when I read it. You need to read this book if you are serious about growing in your professional development and achieving career success.
Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win
By Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
How this book will help you:
I’m not going to lie. The title of this book initially scared me. I mean, having the word extreme in the title can be a bit intimidating. But (wait for it) don’t judge this book by its title, because it’s actually excellent. At its core, this book helps you understand your role when communicating with others. And where your responsibility lies in helping people around you comprehend what you want to convey.
This book is based on military principles with stories from the battlefield. The authors, two U.S. Navy SEAL officers, share their firsthand accounts from battlefields and their military careers and how the skills they learnt can be applied to the workspace.
When I first read this book, I had a significant mind shift. I realised that I had not managed expectations well enough. This book has helped me to establish expectations better. And it feels so much better when things are clear and expectations are well managed.
The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness
By Eric Jorgenson and Tim Ferriss
How this book will help you:
I’m not exaggerating when I say this book is for everyone. There are so many lessons to learn in this book, that I can’t imagine there’s a person alive who would not benefit from reading this book. So if you are a person living on planet Earth, then this book will help you with something.
Wow, what a book, where do I start with this one. Firstly, just the concept and how the book was written was enough to intrigue me even though I had never heard of Naval. I read this book early last year and I’m still trying to get my head around some of the lessons in the book. There’s a lot of good stuff to digest in this book and I mean really good. I kept going back and re-reading pages and sections. Because I was left speechless by the wisdom and the way Naval looks at life and experiences life. We all need the Almanack of Naval Ravikant in our lives.
